The 2024 Gucci Gift advertising campaign is apparently the gift that keeps on giving. Spread across five chapters, chapter one served up Kendall Jenner and gang evoking the spirit of the legendary Savoy hotel in London. Chapter two saw Jenner join Kirsty Hume and daughter Violet, with the casting venturing off on an alpine adventure. The third installment of the Gucci Gift campaign celebrates all-things family for the festive season. Gucci creative director Sabato De Sarno casts Tina Knowles and Solange Knowles as the embodiment of the campaign. Also part of the cast for chapter three are Duyen Nguyen, Lauren Nguyen, Chloe Nguyen, Mariel Hemingway, Dree Hemingway, Langley Fox Hemingway, and Yanii Gough. Each of the three families were captured by De Sarno favorite Anthony Seklaoui for the occasion.

“Wow, that’s bad,” shrieked BlueRuin upon first look.

“WTF is that light placement?” asked a dumbfounded avonlea002.

“This is supposed to make me want to buy these products? Riiiiiiiight,” blueorchid laughed.

Also far from impressed was forum member Frederic01. “This is absolutely terrible and impossibly cringe. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I thought Gucci was supposed to be pursuing ‘brand elevation’ and ‘timeless appeal’? How is this anything here of a elevated or timeless nature?” they questioned.

“If we had razzie awards for fashion, Gucci would take them all at this point,” declared GivenchyAddict.

Subsequent to joining Gucci as creative director in early 2023, Sabato De Sarno has been unable to catch a break. Under the Italian designer’s direction (in addition to declining sales), the luxury Italian fashion house’s advertising campaign imagery has seen better days. Not even campaigns lensed by David Sims and Mario Sorrenti (often starring a bevy of fresh-faced talents) have sufficed. Umpteen campaigns later, there are zero signs of improvement with chapter one of the Gucci Gift 2024 campaign for the festive holiday season ahead. In an attempt to generate buzz, De Sarno brought back Kendall Jenner as the face of Gucci, who is joined by Jessica Chastain, Hiandra Martínez, Lineisy Montero, and Ni Ni. The cast poses for Anthony Seklaoui, with the campaign opening up in a tribute to The Savoy in London (a nod to the hotel where founder Guccio Gucci worked as a porter).

“Tragic! Kendall Jenner for Gucci is so LAME. Don’t get me started on the artistic direction which is giving mid-range US department store. And Kering wonders why their brand keeps sinking,” Frederic01 voiced.

“Gucci believe they’re at a luxury level, but they’re so hungry for those seasonal profits, they’re willing to advertise on the level of Kate Spade or Michael Kors,” tigerrouge chimed in.

Yasouss stated: “I’ve seen better holiday ads from Tommy Hilfiger!”

“The setting looks really cheap,” noted forum member MDNA.

Hchloe wasn’t best impressed either. “God this is so depressing,” they shared.

“This is wrong. So, so wrong,” GivenchyHomme exclaimed.

“This campaign shows an astonishing lack of creativity. It feels so uninspired that even a department store would pass on it,” shrieked ah ah.

We are now four days into Milan Fashion Week, and the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana’s schedule granted us the Gucci Spring 2025 showcase this afternoon. The collection marked the third mainline womenswear outing from Sabato De Sarno, having signed on the dotted line as Gucci creative director in 2023 (replacing Alessandro Michele). The guiding principle of De Sarno’s latest was “casual grandeur” which took shape via the Italian designer’s obsession with all-things tailoring, lingerie, leather, and the silhouettes of the 1960s. Tone-on-tone looks in Rosso Ancora , khaki, tangerine, neon yellow and chocolate brown ran through the collection, with the iconic the Bamboo 1947 handbag heralded as a statement for another season.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“The set design is gorgeous and the cast is on point. The clothes not so much.” [LadyJunon]

“I kinda love it. Very few looks are misses, for me.” [KoV]

“Sabato haters are going to have a hard time criticizing this one. It’s an evolution and let’s be honest, it looks great.” [signifier]

“The show was a disaster. First look and I already knew it was a flop. The basicness of it. And those tracksuit-inspired pants oh dear. Seriously, Sabato De Sarno has zero vision for the brand. This collection was just a bunch of uninspired clothes put together with no emotion, no direction.” [Frederic01]

“So basic and generic! No POV at all. It’s many things mixed together to hide the lack of vision. Gucci needs somebody with a real vision. This could be a Zara fashion show.” [Creative]

“I can’t believe we have to call this ‘high’ fashion. Boring, unimaginative, and faceless.” [GoldenPetals]

“This was a trunk show. De Sarno showed everything under the sun so ultimately, everybody is going to find something they like. I find it decent verging on boring. A non-event.” [Lola701]

Subsequent to taking up the mantle as Gucci creative director in January 2023, Sabato De Sarno has remained loyal to a very select rooster of photographers when producing advertising campaigns. One of the names on De Sarno’s speed dial is David Sims, who has ultimately captured Gucci’s mainline advertising campaigns since the Spring 2024 season. The Fall 2024 Gucci eyewear campaign, however, sees the Italian designer replace Sims with Mario Sorrenti. Models Abbey Lee, Liya Kebede, He Cong and George Barnett come together before the lens of the Italian-American photographer, and pose amongst a clinical studio setting for a series of minimalist campaign portraits.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“How come everything related to Sabato De Sarno is so boring? Like even with skilled models and another photographer, it’s no different,” sighed fashionsavvvvvy.

“Cast is good but it’s just so dry and boring,” wrote Yasouss in complete agreement.

“Casting is excellent but the images fall flat. Such a pity,” thiago echoed.

Sharing the same underwhelming sentiments was vogue28. “All of these campaigns under Sabato De Sarno are beginning to blend into one. I’m starting to yearn for some differentiation. I guess, at the very least, it’s not photographed by David Sims.”

“Again: white background, same clothes, forcing models to do pretentious dialog about nothing!” critiqued forum member PDFSD.

Lola701 noted: “The campaign is terrible, but so is Sabato’s (lack of) vision for the house. Consistent!”

Sabato De Sarno has been installed as Gucci creative director since January 2023 and continues to rely on David Sims to capture his vision of the new Gucci woman. Sims was first sought after the capture Daria Werbowy for the Marina Chain jewelry campaign, captured a handful of fresh faces for the campaign to accompany his debut Spring 2024 collection and was called upon to shoot the eyewear campaign starring Vittoria Ceretti. To no one’s amazement, De Sarno welcomes back the British fashion photographer with open arms for the Fall 2024 campaign (the designer’s second collection as creative director). Models Alaato Jazyper, Jiahui Zhang and Loli Bahia come together this season, who pose in front of Sims’ lens throughout the minimalist campaign series, shot within a photographic studio in Milan, Italy.

“No words,” immediately shared Scotty the moment the campaign dropped.

“Please can they put an end to this?” asked GivenchyAddict.

“I don’t think there’s ever been an era in fashion where models looked this bad. They always appear to have rolled right out of bed. This aversion towards makeup and beauty styling needs to end,” added aracic.

VogueDisciple93 declared: “They’d be better off without a campaign!”

“I would defend this if they looked chic, with nice hair and make up. The ‘concept’ is totally wrong because his clothes don’t say anything and the models are giving nothing. It’s just nothing,” Alquimista critiqued.

“Absolutely pitiful,” described a majorly underwhelmed lookatme.

“To say Gucci’s campaign imagery under Sabato De Sarno has become depressing would be an understatement. So horrifically glamour-less, sterile, and banal beyond belief. The nonexistent beauty styling only adds insult to injury,” ranted vogue28.

Sabato De Sarno means business at Gucci and continues to leave his mark on the Italian fashion house. The Italian director has been installed as Gucci creative director since January 2023 and since that time has streamlined the Gucci wardrobe and overhauled the brand’s advertising campaigns. De Sarno’s next project is seemingly re-envisioning the beauty division and to mark the release of the ‘Rosso Ancora’ shade of the Rouge à Lèvres Mat lipstick, opts to refresh the Gucci Beauty campaign imagery. De Sarno enlists photographer Ezra Petronio for the occasion, who points his lenses toward models Abbey Lee, Jiahui Zhang and Nyajuok Gatdet, resulting in a trio of captivating and flawless campaign images.

“Why can’t they just hire Ezra Petronio for everything?” asked NoInvite.

MModa noted: “The photographs remind me of Andy Warhol’s celebrity polaroids. I think that the ads work as a whole!”

“I like how clean and simple the images are,” admired tigerrouge.

“Love it so much! It’s clean and impactful. Abbey’s shot is striking. All three are gorgeous to be fair. Great casting,” applauded Valentine27.

Subsequent to signing on the dotted line with Gucci as creative director in January 2023, Sabato De Sarno has remained one of the most talked-about designers. Prior to his appointment at Gucci, the Italian designer’s resume included stints at Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and a fourteen-year career at Valentino.

De Sarno presented his debut Gucci collection during the Spring 2024 season of Milan Fashion Week and luckily for us, directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost were on hand to document the build-up to the highly-anticipated “Gucci Ancora” collection. Narrated by actor and Gucci brand ambassador Paul Mescal, the Who is Sabato De Sarno? A Gucci Story documentary premiered on the film platform Mubi on March 15 and is now available for your immediate viewing pleasure via Gucci’s official YouTube channel. Needless to say, the 20-minute mini documentary is a total must-watch.

Today marks the fourth day of Menswear Milan Fashion Week – the final on this season’s jam-packed schedule. At 02:00pm CEST, the fashion pack gathered together to bare witness to Sabato De Sarno’s sophomore menswear collection as Gucci creative director. The Italian designer opted to stage his latest showcase within the Triennale Milano, a sprawling design and art museum situated in the largest park in Milan. Sat perched on the front row was Paul Mescal (a brand ambassador) donning a striped cotton pair of shorts that upon first glance could have been mistaken for boxers. Mescal’s choice in attire was in fact a preview of things to come, with De Sarno dressing 41 of his 46 models in shorts. One model took to the runway donning just a pair of leather shorts in Gucci’s De Sarno-designed “Ancora Rosso” oxblood color. Surfing motifs were splashed throughout the collection, with De Sarno seeking inspiration from William Finnegan’s autobiography Barbarian Days. On the accessories front, the Gucci B crossbody bag made a reappearance – first introduced in De Sarno’s debut collection.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“The clothes and styling is just so feminine and also so dorky. And as with everything from Sabotage De Sarno so far, it just looks so department store/mid-market.” [lookatme]

“I can’t define what I just saw. It has zero soul, zero identity. It’s like a little bit of Prada but done in a very ugly way. Then part of it seems inspired by what your 10K-followers-basic-and-brainless-influencer-around-the-corner-who-sees-himself-as-an-underground-edgy-figure-and-thinks-that-has-WW-influence was wearing 2 years ago. It just doesn’t make any sense to me.” [Creative]

“They say they’re trying to regain a more traditional customer, but then they fill 2/3 of the collection with booty shorts.” [LadyJunon]

“It’s like Zara did a collection inspired by Prada and Valentino, only thing is that Zara would’ve had the awareness to do this a few years ago when the designs were new.” [VogueDisciple93]

“This is such a laugh! I can’t point out a single idea of Sabato De Sarno for Gucci. All we see is just a remix of Prada, Valentino, Dior etc. There is no vision, there is no soul.” [Olaffo]

“A bit like Prada, a bit like Valentino, a bit like Ferragamo (pre- Davis) and none of it is Gucci.” [Yasouss]

“Oh well, I think his time will be up soon. No conviction, these models don’t look confident. No characteristics, no personality. Just clothes that fill the void gives no meaning whatsoever.” [TaylorBinque]

In late 2023, Sabato De Sarno kick-started his tenure as Gucci creative director by overhauling the Italian fashion house’s campaign imagery.

The Italian designer called upon David Sims to help implement change, who captured Vittoria Ceretti for the studio-designed Fall 2024 season. Daria Werbowy was even even welcomed out of retirement for the Marina Chain jewelry campaign. De Sarno also commissioned Sims to lens his first official womenswear campaign for Spring 2024. It’s a repeat performance with the unveiling of the designer’s debut menswear collection for Fall 2024. The campaign unites newer faces from the male modeling wold, with some more familiar. Clement Chabernaud, Finn Collins, George Barnett, Joel Ortiz, Junyeong Baek, Martin Miller and Modou Wade comprise of the cast for the occasion, each making an appearance in the minimalist campaign series. The concept echoes the womenswear offering, with De Sarno’s cast captured within Sims’ photographic studio and posing against a simplistic studio backdrop.

“So boring and bland, perfectly matching the talentless Sabato,” shared JoCaderone.

Sharing the same level of enthusiasm was vogue28. “So horrifically bland, lifeless, soulless ALL that. Hard to believe this is a campaign like a mega fashion house like Gucci. I can’t even say De Sarno needs to ditch David Sims because those Anthony Seklaoui campaigns were also… dull,” he pointed out.

“Why does this whole campaign feeling like a Gap or e-comm catalog in the 90s?” asked Imelaine.

“Clement and George are definitely the highlight of this campaign, it should’ve just been them. The clothes could honestly be Zara,” voiced mteb123.

For Sabato De Sarno’s debut Cruise collection as Gucci’s creative director, the designer ventured to London – to the British capital’s Tate Modern to be exact. London, of course, has a special connection with the historic Italian fashion house founded in 1921. After all, it was the place Guccio Gucci was inspired to create his house when working as a luggage porter at The Savoy Hotel toward the end of the 1800s. Fast forward to 2024 and De Sarno showcased his Cruise 2025 offering inside the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern. Guests like Dua Lupa, Demi Moore, Alexa Chung and Kate Moss made a beeline for their front row seats, situated within the vast show space decorated with masses of foliage. Sabato kept his silhouette strict, attempting to fuse nostalgia and modernity – with a dash of romance. Maxi skirts, elongated bombers, and slouchy denim jeans reigned supreme and the Gucci Blondie bag from 1972 was one of the many leather goods pieces on show.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Why even bother to do a show for this?” [Creative]

“It’s worse than I expected. Impossibly bland and lacking any identity whatsoever…” [Frederic01]

“Absolutely Pathetic. A complete waste of money, time, and resources.” [GivenchyHomme]

“Absolutely zero substance or creative point of view. Gucci seems like one of these brands that’s waiting for a creative director and meanwhile we’re experiencing collections ‘by the studio’.” [Thefrenchy]

“Gosh this is hard to watch. He got absolutely no clue what he’s doing here. No voice, no vision, no direction. It’s so dire that they’re even trying to throw some (early) Alessandro in the mix to see if it sticks, which is hilarious given everything that happened.” [Marc10]

“Embarrassing, lifeless and not necessary.” [Ihhbl]

“Why show at Tate Modern if you can’t relate to the place at all. A huge miss.” [matheus_s]

“A parade of stuff. It’s too merchandised oriented for me. You see all the categories and it’s so obvious! The worst thing about the collection is the styling! You can make boring clothes but style them in a fabulous way. Here it was a complete mess.” [Lola701]

“There is nothing desirable about sloppy jeans, boxy skirts , its all so juvenile. Gucci has truly fallen. The shoes and bags are atrocious! Sabato De Sarno is definitely going to be thrown out soon.” [disco54]
